BANGKOK, Thailand, 20 November 2014 —— Sony and Samitivej Public Company (“Samitivej”) entered into an agreement to collaborate in the promotion, development and facilitation of medical services and technologies in Thailand and the ASEAN region. The partnership is founded on mutual interest to improve the healthcare industry as socially-responsible corporate citizens.

Sony manufactures audio, video, communications and information technology products for the global consumer and professional markets. It has expertise in designing and manufacturing medical solutions and systems, and has contributed to innovations in the medical field for over 25 years.

Dr. Chairat Panthuraamphorn, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Samitivej Public Co., Ltd., said: “Samitivej is emerging as a regional leader in healthcare. Now moving forward, the next phase is to set ourselves up for the next 10-20 years. The collaboration with Sony will strongly position us to offer such innovative services, given our advanced IT infrastructure, medical excellence, full team of experts and readiness to provide services to both Thai and foreign customers. These are the key factors that will enable us to bring the future of healthcare solutions to life.”

We believe these advances in healthcare technology will improve patient care and service delivery, plus greater confidence and peace of mind for patients’ health concerns. At the same time, this collaboration will enable us to serve more people in remote areas where healthcare is out of reach – and that is what our mission is all about,” added Dr. Chairat Panthuraamphorn.

Content Management System (CMS) in the medical field

Sony has been developing a new Content Management System (CMS) for medical applications, which enables easy and secure access to live surgical videos, video-on-demand and other reference materials. It will enable content management, editing of content for secondary usage, live video streaming for information sharing, and is configurable for greater flexibility. The Medical CMS will be able to deliver content over IP networks for conference presentations, internal meetings or educational trainings or seminars. Sony will provide Samitivej with this system for their evaluation and will seek feedback on the system plus explore offering commercial systems in future.

Telehealth Camera System in the medical field

A joint effort between Sony and Samitivej will explore how to improve the delivery of healthcare services in remote areas of Thailand. The Sony Telehealth camera (STC)* system is designed to meet the specific needs of regional healthcare. The system enables two-way audio and one-way video communication using IP technology, allowing specialists to remotely access patients and conduct medical consultations. STC has been designed specifically to address privacy concerns, simplify installation, offer simple operation and ensure reliability. It improves patient care delivery in a more timely and cost effective manner, and over 200 systems are already in use across Australia. Sony and Samitivej will now bring this technology to remote areas of Thailand by providing trial STC systems in a pilot project.

Upon successful implementation of these pilot projects in Samitivej’s facilities, such as the CMS and Telehealth Camera System, it is the intention of both Sony and Samitivej to introduce these projects to other hospitals in Thailand. The aim is for these hospitals to learn how the projects can contribute to the promotion, development and facilitation of medical services and technologies in the country. Subsequently, if these hospitals are interested in launching any projects, Sony will offer consultation services to facilitate the process.

“We’ve engaged in several initiatives to expand our medical solutions business in the region, working closely with key accounts to deepen business partnerships. In line with this, we’re also focused on contributing our technologies for social good to benefit the medical industries we operate in,” said Motomi Saito, Division Managing Director, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP), Sony Electronics Asia Pacific. “I am very excited that we’ve established this partnership with Samitivej, the first agreement we’ve had with a hospital in the ASEAN region. We will channel our expertise in medical technologies, resources and assets into this partnership, and look forward to establishing more partnerships in time to come. I am confident that such collaborations will bring greater innovation and efficiencies to medical services in Thailand and the ASEAN region.”

“Our ambition is to develop continuous, full coverage medical services by employing the latest medical innovations, resulting in safer and more precise treatment and care. Our patients can then have the utmost confidence in choosing Samitivej as their trusted hospital,” said Dr. Chairat Panthuraamphorn.
