MG brings British automotive heritage to Thailand with public debut of MG6

Aerodynamic-optimised fastback body style breaks traditional passenger car design norm

photo 1 BANGKOK —— British car manufacturer MG is writing a new chapter in the Thai automotive market with the introduction of the MG6 sedan and fastback.

The MG6 is produced at MG’s assembly plant, located at the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate in Chonburi. The 30-rai facility has been built with an investment of THBaht9 billion, and is capable of producing 50,000 vehicles per year.

According to Wu Huan, president of SAIC Motor-CP Co. Ltd., the manufacturer of MG vehicles in Thailand, production of the MG6, which carries a local content of 40 percent, will support both domestic and export markets.

“MG plans to export cars from Thailand to potential right hand drive markets around the world. Thailand will serve as the production base for right hand drive models, and we will carry out export marketing plans to support our production,” Wu Huan, president of SAIC Motor – CP Co.,Ltd said.

Featuring the “Brit Dynamic” fun to drive theme that combines 4 unique characteristics namely performance, handling, design and safety into a highly attractive package, the MG6 is an example of how driver intuition is blended with racetrack engineering. Result is an automobile with outstanding performance, impeccable design, driver-oriented handling as well as world-class safety.

Power comes from a turbocharged and intercooled 1.8-litres TCI-TECH engine capable of producing 118kW (161hp) at 5,500rpm and 215Nm of torque at a low 2,500rpm, giving the MG6 excellent flexibility.

The aluminium engine, which features electronic MFI (Multipoint Fuel Injection), DVVT (Dual Variable Valve Timing), motorsports-derived cooling system and a new-generation EMS6204 engine management system, is mated to a 6-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for increased driving enjoyment as well as a higher level of active safety. The intelligent gearbox is lightning quick with a shift time of just 0.2 seconds, and is high fuel efficiency.

The MG6 is the only turbocharged vehicle in its class, and the 1.8-litre engine is capable of producing as much power and torque as normally-aspirated 2.0-litre engines. The engine of the MG6 is E20-compatible as well.

Apart from its exciting performance, the MG6 also offers excellent fuel efficiency and emission levels.

The MG6’s sports-oriented chassis offers a European ride quality with precise handling as well as excellent high-speed stability. This is achieved through an appropriate frequency of the sprung mass as well as large-diameter stabiliser bar that helps maintain a high level of lateral support during hard cornering.

The shock absorbers have also been calibrated to offer the best balance between compression and damping force recovery. The MG6’s independent suspension, featuring McPherson struts in front and a Z-type multi-link at the rear, comes with excellent elastic damper matching optimisation. It allows for more precise handling and improved driving pleasure, while at the same time maintaining a high level of stability.

The passionate European styling of the MG6 aims to create a sense of movement, even when the car is stationary. The Air-Flow Tuner Plus aerodynamic spoiler provides better aerodynamic performance as well as fuel economy. A choice of 17-inch and 16-inch wheels is offered while a European-style “shark fin” antenna on the roof is also used.

The interior boasts great attention to details and spaciousness, reflecting MG’s dynamic integration interior theme. The MG6 boasts plenty of interior space with generous amounts of leg and shoulder room to help create a comfortable driving environment.

For the fastback version, luggage space increased to as much as 429 litres with the foldable rear seat backrests down.

In terms of safety, the MG6 boasts innovative USD (Ultimate Stiffness Design) body design, with as much as 63 per cent of the vehicle structure being made from ultra-high and high-strength steel, matching European 5-star crash safety standards.

A collection of 10 intelligent driver assistance systems are offered in the MG6. They include ESP (Electronic Stability Program), TCS (Traction Control), MSR (Motor Control Slide Retainer), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ITPMS (Indirect Monitor Tyre System), BDC (Brake Disc Cleaning), EBA (Electronic Brake Assist) and HAS (Hill Start Assist System).

The top trim also comes with a total of four airbags – dual front SRS airbags and dual side airbags integrated in the front anti-submarining seats.

The MG6 comes to Thailand with two body variances: sporty fastback and sedan versions with five different product variances and five colours of them: Regal Red, Pitch Black arctic White, Granite Grey and Platinum Silver. The sporty fastback are available in two versions which are 1.8 X Turbo and 1.8 D Turbo whereas, there are three variances of sedan versions 1.8 X Turbo, 1.8 D and 1.8 C.

Both variances of the sporty fast back, which are: MG6 1.8 X Turbo is priced at THBaht1,108,000,- and the 1.8 D Turbo is priced at THBaht968,000,-. The powertrain features 161 horse power and the maximum torque of 215 Nm. Matched with six speed dual clutch transmission. The model with 1.8 X Sunroof is priced at THBaht1,128,000,- while the 1.8 D Turbo Sunroof is priced at THBaht988,000,-.

The MG6 Sedan 1.8 X Turbo is priced at THBaht1,098,000,-. It features 1.8-litre engine equipped with turbo charger. The 1.8 D is priced at THBaht898,000,- and the entry model of the MG6, the 1.8 C is priced at THBaht848,000,-. The 1.8 X Turbo with sunroof is priced at THBaht1,118,000,- while the 1.8 D Sunroof is priced at THBaht918,000,-.

SAIC Motor-CP Co. Ltd., and MG Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd, the manufacturer and distributor of MG also distributes the vehicles to local dealerships, has targeted sales of 2,000 units of the MG6 during the remaining part of this year.

A total of 30 MG dealers from around the country are planned and will be operational this year. The first 9 dealerships will open on July 1, and will be a total numbers of 16 dealers by August. MG believes that in order to build a strong foundation for further business, development of the dealer network plays an instrumental role in maximising customer satisfaction and further strengthening its brand in Thailand.

The MG6 is ready for booking from today onwards, and among the special offers awaiting passionate MG customers are the MG Roadside Assistance, MG Mobile Service and Special Warranty of 4 years or 120,000 kilometres.

In terms of after sales operation, MG has recently opened its Parts Distribution Centre, located on Bangna-Trat Km.19, featuring the latest technology in auto parts storage and delivery. Presently the 5,000-sq.metre facility stocks up as much as 22,000 different spare parts which are delivered 24 hours nationwide.

“The centre is fully-equipped in terms of tools, spare parts, staff and systems, which allows it to provide service that meets customer expectations in a swift and effective manner. The centre aims to meet the needs of our business partners so that they can operate efficiently as well as quickly,” Wu added.

In addition, the MG Service Centre and Training Centre, located in Onnut road, has also been established and is now in operation.

OVERVIEW

The rich history of MG began nearly 90 years ago in 1924. The famous initials we know and love were chosen by Cecil Kimber, the founder of MG. Kimber chose the letters as a “nod” to William Morris, his employer, and the owner of Morris Garages. Kimber, didn’t just come up with the name. He also created the first line of MGs. He started out by fitting coach-built tourer bodies to the Morris Cowley chassis, creating cars known as the Morris Garage Chummy. A few years later, in 1924, he designed the 14/28 Super Sports model, the first true MG, and the car that premiered the octagonal logo which has journeyed ever since.

Today, MG is making a return to the Thai automobile market with the launch of the MG6, which is the first of several products from the British manufacturer to be marketed in the kingdom.

At MG, passionate automobiles that reflect the “Brit Dynamic” philosophy combining racetrack-inspired performance with sharp design cues, crisp handling and world-class safety were created.

The MG6 is an all-new car from the chassis up, designed and developed by a team of highly professional automotive designers and engineers based at MG Motor UK’s MG Birmingham site.

DESIGN

The car was designed by a team led by Tony Williams-Kenny and the engineering and development team was led by David Lindley.

Both the Design Centre and the Technical Centre are based at the MG Birmingham site where final assembly of the MG6 GT also takes place. A UK design and engineering staff of more than 300 professionals are based at the Birmingham operation.

The fastback styling of the MG6 distinguishes the car from the rest of the competition, and both the fastback and the sedan design has been optimised to maximise aerodynamic performance.

An Air-Flow Tuner and aerodynamic spoiler also help improve aerodynamics further, leading to lower fuel consumption.

The interior of the MG6 boasts ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. This is a genuine 5-seater vehicle, with the centre rear seat offering enough space for an adult.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, which passes the stringent Euro 5 emission standards, is a newcomer in the C-segment and produces as much power and torque at larger 2.0-litre engines. Featuring a Honeywell ultra-high pressure TCI-Tech intercooled turbocharging technology and DVVT (Dual Variable Valve Timing), the engine is capable of generating 118kW (161hp) at 5,500rpm and 215Nm of torque at 2,500rpm.

While the open engine design comes from Porsche, the engine cooling system is derived from motorsports. Other engine highlights include electronic MFI (Multipoint Fuel Injection), DVVT (Double Variable Valve Timing), a new-generation Siemens EMS6204 engine management system and a new electronic valve control system.

Meanwhile, the 6-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) not only provides swift acceleration but also helps minimise fuel consumption. The gearbox has a shift time of just 0.2 seconds, and features five different driving modes. The MG6 also comes with F1-styled shift paddles located at the back of the steering wheel, allowing drivers to changed gears manually at the touch of the fingertip. Multi-cone synchronisers help reduce shift shock and noise.

CHASSIS

Chassis engineers were given the task of developing the platform for a car that would be deliver a mix of suppleness and poise. The steel monocoque construction is not only strong, but is designed to retain all the dynamic qualities.

Apart from offering a high-performance drive characteristics with good control and precise handling capabilities, the MG6’s sports-oriented chassis tuning allows motorists to better understand the MG driving pleasure.

With front McPherson strut suspension and a Z-type multi-link rear set up, the MG6 handles like a much smaller sporty car which belies its size.

Among the highlights of the front strut rear multi-link suspension include:

– Appropriate frequency of the sprung mass for good handling and stability.

– Appropriate diameter of the stabiliser bar to enhance vehicle roll stiffness, which effectively increases lateral support when cornering the vehicle.

– Reasonable balance between compression and shock absorber damping force recovery.

– Independent suspension offers excellent elastic damping matching optimisation, allowing for more precise handling and improved driving pleasure at the same time.

Meanwhile, the power steering provides drivers with a great ‘feel for the road’ with the MG6. This is one of the characteristics of a ‘driver’s car’ and the MG6 GT certainly delivers. Power steering is progressive without being intrusive.

SAFETY

The MG6 comes with a comprehensive list of active and passive safety features, starting off with the innovative USD (Ultimate Stiffness Design) body construction, consisting of ultra-high-strength and high-strength steel used in a proportion of 63%. All MG6 models come with side impact beams and have a Euro NCAP 4-star rating.

 

There’s a total of 10 intelligent smart safety systems on board the MG6.  They include the following: VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), TCS (Traction Control), MSR (Motor Control Slide Retainer), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ITPMS (Indirect Monitor Tire System), BDC (Brake Disc Cleaning), BA (Brake Assist) and HAS (Hill Start Assist System).

There are four airbags, made up of dual front SRS airbags and dual side airbags, while other passive safety features include anti-submarine racing seats, collapsible steering column, fuel shutoff valve, etc.
