– Together with Honda to preserve the green of Vietnam in Bac Kan Town for the 2nd year
HANOI, Vietnam —— Not only being one of the leading vehicle manufactures in Vietnam by bringing motorcycle and automobile products of high quality to the market, Honda Vietnam Company (HVN) has also engaged in many social contribution activities, of which environmental protection is always regarded as its long-term and core responsibility.
After the success of Tree Planting Project upon Afforestation and Reforestation Clean Development Mechanism (AR – CDM) in Hoa Binh Province for the 2003-2011 stage, HVN has continued to cooperate with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Kan Province to implement the Production Afforestation Project since 2013. On 20 April 2014, HVN holds “Tree Planting Day” for the 2nd year in Xuat Hoa Commune, Bac Kan Town.
The Production Afforestation Project in Bac Kan Town is the one developed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Kan Province under the technical consultation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the specialised guidance of the Vietnam Forestry University. The total duration of project is 8 years, in which the first four years (from 2013 to 2016) will be for planting trees on 490 ha of protective forest at 2 communes namely Nong Thuong and Xuat Hoa of Bac Kan Town. The next four years will be the stage of caring, thinning and protecting trees. Harvest will start from 2020.
As the only sponsor of project, HVN supports VND 4.9 billion for 8 years (from 2013 to 2020) which includes costs of project preparations, training agricultural and forestry officials and local farmers, high-quality seedlings purchase, tree-caring labor, and fertilisers.
After 8 years of implementation, it is estimated that the project can yield 73,500m3 of wood which would bring a profit of about VND 50 billion. Households taking part in the project will get 100% of the proceeds of selling timber after harvesting. Thus, the project not only contributes to environmental protection, but also directly helps raise the local people’s living standards and contributes to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
After nearly one year of implementing the project, so far there have been 209 ha of forest planted and cared. The average height of project tree increases from 20 cm to 40-60 cm, and average diameter is 0.5 cm, increasing by 0.3cm compared with the initial size. Following the success of “Tree Planting Day 2013” with participation of more than 300 HVN’s associates, HVN now coordinates with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Kan Province to organise “Tree Planting Day 2014” in Xuat Hoa Commune, Bac Kan Province. The “Tree Planting Day 2014” attracts more than 200 HVN’s associates and Honda-related partners in Bac Kan, together with a large number of local people to start with an area of 2ha. In the 2nd year, the estimated total area for afforestation will be 161 ha.
“Tree Planting Day 2014” is the next step of the Production Afforestation Project which reflects HVN’s efforts to become a dynamic citizen of the country, a “Company that the society wants to exist”.
