BEKASI, Indonesia —— Chevrolet Indonesia launched a new top-of-the-line variant of the Spin sub-compact multi-purpose vehicle with bolder, edgier lines and a new interior to commemorate the MPV’s first anniversary. Spin Activ will appeal to customers who want to stand out in a crowd, without sacrificing comfort and versatility.
Modeled to incorporate the cool, rugged looks of a sport-utility vehicle, Spin Activ is expected to appeal to younger car buyers who like a bit of adventure as an escape from the ordinary.
In terms of growth, the MPV and SUV segments are two of the biggest segments in Indonesia. Spin Activ, with its sporty and SUV-like exterior, serves as a bridge for those who want comfort, space, versatility and carrying capacity of MPVs without the weight, size, four-wheel-drive drivetrain and higher price of SUVs.
“This is a great example of how GM and Chevrolet infuse market requirement into how our vehicles are designed so they perform as expected, and into how they are engineered and manufactured so they are reliable and last a long time,” said Pranav Bhatt, Chief Finance Officer, PT General Motors Indonesia.

One of the main design criteria of the original Spin was to be different from other MPVs. Spin Activ takes this distinction even further. Complementing its ‘active’ tag are fibre body kits, including front and rear spoilers and door mouldings in solid black. This treatment creates a sturdy and outdoorsy appearance, similar to what is usually found on SUVs.
Rounding off the bolder and darker exterior are black masking on the head- and tail-lights and alloy wheels with darker colour tone. Spin Activ also features Chevrolet’s ‘Follow-Me Home’ function which, if turned on, keeps the headlights on for a preset period – useful in dark garages and porches.
Developed on Chevrolet’s global sub-compact platform, Spin is a full seven-seater sub-compact MPV with space, comfort, versatility, efficiency and superior driving dynamics in an edgy, contemporary and muscular design package, on a compact footprint. Spin Activ retains all these qualities – the fresh design cues merely distinguishing it further away from its competition.
The first impression of Spin Activ’s interior is one of sophistication, enhanced by its all-black interior and matching all-black seats. It also comes with dual airbags, a Bluetooth-enabled audio system, with an additional audio control switch mounted on the steering wheel. Luxurious as it may be, complete with air-conditioning vents for third-row seats, the seven-seater maintains its interior flexibility, with flat-folding second- and third-row seats that provide the vehicle with a maximum of 1,668 litres of cargo space.
The high level of flexibility is complemented by roominess and comfort for occupants due to efficient utilisation of space, such as relocating the parking brake lever to make space for cup holders. In addition to 23 configurable seating positions, the Spin has a total of 32 storage spaces throughout its interior.
A high ‘theatre-style’ seating position provides occupants with good all-round visibility and a sense of roominess, while the high driving position enhances visibility and reduces fatigue. The driver faces an instrument binnacle that houses a digital speedometer flanked by an analog tachometer, adding a touch of sportiness to Spin Activ’s interior.
Another important element in the Spin’s interior is insulation – the interior is well-insulated to isolate occupants from noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), providing a very quiet ride.
For People on the Move
Spin Activ comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine featuring DOHC (Double-Overhead Camshafts), Dual-VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and multi-point fuel injection, capable of 109 PS at 6,000 rpm and 142 Nm at 3,800 rpm. Power to the front wheels is channeled via a first-in-class six-speed automatic transmission with driver shift control, a feature found only in more expensive vehicles.
To complement the quiet interior and enhance a car-like experience, the Spin features an all-coil spring, fully-independent front and semi-independent rear suspension tuned to provide superior driving dynamics. It is compliant in city driving while suitably stiff to offer high-speed stability. Handling is responsive without sacrificing passenger comfort.

As the first market to launch the new variant, upgrades and enhancements for Spin Activ were developed by Chevrolet Indonesia, based on market trends.

Positioned at the higher end of the MPV-B sub-segment, Chevrolet has sold 13,759 units of Spin from March 2013 (when it was launched) to March 2014. Barely six months after its launch, Spin finished third in its segment (Entry MPV Category) in J.D. Power’s Asia Pacific 2013 Indonesia Initial Quality Study. The 1.3-litre diesel variant also won one of leading automotive magazine’s fuel efficiency award in 2013. Spin was the first in its class to offer such a powertrain.
